THE ASHUTOSH DOCTRINE (For OMFS Residents)

Rule 0: Eat When you can, sleep when you can. There is no eating time. There is no sleeping time.

Rule 1: Don’t be a hero. Ask your seniors and professor. Even if you are not doing wrong, there might be better ways.

Rule 2: Do not do more than what the patient asks of you. Suggest them options and extensions. Do not take matter into own hands.

Rule 3: Be careful while treating family members, hospital staff, known patients or anyone out of allocated routine. They always present with more complications than normal, either during procedure or after.

Rule 4: When a resident comes across any illness, holiday, personal problems, or poor weather, he will proceed exactly as if there were no problems.

Rule 5: Watch out for small mistakes. Ensure safety. Correct unsafe habits. Mishaps happen due to negligence more than due to accidents.

Rule 6: Assume everyone is an idiot. Double check instructions. Monitor progress. Instructions should be simple, short, clear, and if possible/needed progressive (in a flow of events). Write them down if needed.

Rule 7: Any history from patient/patient party with more than 10 days of hospitalization is unreliable. Patient party have partial knowledge (they change with other patient party), they are irritated and possibly confused.

Rule 8: Negotiations with any supplier, agency or person with a result of financial benefit to oneself or a institution is to be strictly avoided. One is allowed to do negotiations for collective academic benefits once a year but not at the cost of increase is patient expenditure.
